Sound familiar?

Tilt your chopping board to the light.

Every cut leaves a groove. On a plastic board, those grooves used to be plastic, which raises an awkward question: where did it go? Researchers who chopped carrots on plastic boards measured tiny plastic particles coming off the board during ordinary chopping. Here is what they measured.

Wooden boards have their own habits. They soak up water and juice, the smell of last night's garlic settles in, and a board that never fully dries can grow mould in its cuts. Beetroot leaves its pink mark on both.

Titanium is the simple way out. A solid metal sheet has no plastic to shed and nothing that soaks things up. Your knife leaves fine marks over time, not the deep grooves you get in plastic or wood, and a quick rinse takes off the onion, the garlic and the beetroot.

How it works

Chop. Rinse. Done.

  1. Chop as usual

Fruit, vegetables, herbs, raw meat, fish. The brushed titanium is smooth and non-porous, so juice sits on top instead of soaking in.

  2. Rinse under the tap

Warm water and a sponge take off beetroot, garlic and onion in seconds. Add a drop of dishwashing liquid after raw meat or oily food.

  3. Stand it up to dry

Water cannot make it swell, crack or go mouldy the way timber can, and there is nothing to oil. Slide it into a drawer or hang it by the handle slot.

It is a chopping surface, not a cleaning product. It does not kill germs, so wash it after raw meat or fish like any board.

Why titanium

What plastic and wood cannot do.

No plastic to shed

Pure titanium is one solid metal, not a coating and not a plastic blend. When your knife meets it, there is no plastic to come off.

Nothing to soak in

A non-porous surface means no knife-groove gunk, no garlic smell that hangs around for days and no pink beetroot stain. Rinse it and it looks like it did this morning.

Slim and light

A 1.0 mm sheet: the 34 x 23 cm board is listed at 370 g packed and slips into a drawer or the gap beside the fridge. It is a slim board, not a heavy block, and we would rather you know that before you order.

Bare titanium. Nothing to hide.

Who it is for

Made for kitchens with less plastic in them.

  • Cooks cutting back on plastic

You have already swapped the cling wrap and the plastic containers. The board you chop on every day is the obvious next one.

  • New homes

Setting up a new kitchen? Start with a board that will not be deeply grooved, stained or mouldy a year from now.

  • Anyone tired of the garlic smell

Onion, garlic, fish, chilli: rinse it and the smell goes down the sink, not into the next fruit salad.

  • The Christmas gift

For the cook who has everything except a board that rinses clean. The Set puts three sizes in one parcel. Order by 5 December for the best chance before Christmas (our estimate).

Care

  • Rinse under warm running water straight after use. Most things come off in seconds
  • After raw meat, fish or oily food: a drop of dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge
  • Dry it with a tea towel or stand it up to drip dry
  • Our supplier does not state that it is dishwasher safe, so we suggest washing it by hand
  • Skip steel wool and harsh scourers to keep the brushed finish even
  • To go easy on your knife edge: slice and rock rather than hack, and hone the edge regularly

In the box

  • The Board: one 34 x 23 cm titanium board, packed flat in a protective bag
  • The Duo: the 34 x 23 cm board and a 25 x 15 cm board
  • The Set: three boards, 34 x 23, 29 x 20 and 25 x 15 cm

Safety

  • Do not use it on the stove, in the oven or in the microwave.
  • If it slides on a smooth benchtop, put a damp tea towel underneath.
  • It is a thin metal sheet: carry it by the handle slot and keep it out of reach of small children.
  • Wash it well with hot soapy water after raw meat, fish or poultry, as with any board.

The guarantee

60 days to try it. Refund without sending it back.

Chop on it for 60 days. If you do not love it, email [email protected] with your order number and a photo of the board. We refund what you paid for the boards you are not happy with.

You do not have to send it back. Posting a board back overseas costs more than it is worth, so keep it, use it as a serving board or pass it on. One guarantee claim per order.

This is on top of your rights under the Australian Consumer Law, which no policy of ours can take away.

Questions

Straight answers.

Is it really pure titanium?

Our supplier lists it as pure titanium, food grade, and the listed weight fits: 370 g packed for the 34 x 23 cm board. The same 1.0 mm sheet in stainless steel would weigh about 620 g, because titanium is much lighter than steel. Pop yours on the kitchen scale when it arrives. If it is not what we describe, our 60-day guarantee and your rights under the Australian Consumer Law cover you.

Will it dull my knives?

Faster than wood or plastic, yes. Any metal surface is harder than a board that gives a little, and America's Test Kitchen came to the same conclusion when it tested metal boards. Our advice: use it for prep and serving, slice and rock rather than hack straight down, keep a wooden board for heavy cleaver work, and give your knife a few strokes on a honing steel every week or two. If that trade-off is not for you, the 60-day guarantee covers it.

It is only 1.0 mm. Will it bend?

It is a slim sheet, not a thick block. That makes it light and easy to store, and it lies flat on the bench while you cut. Being thin, it can flex a little if you carry a heavy load on it by one end, so slide the food off rather than walking a full board across the kitchen. If it slides on a smooth benchtop, put a damp tea towel under it.

Does it hold smells or stain?

No. Metal does not soak anything up, so onion, garlic, fish and beetroot rinse off with warm water and a sponge. Very oily food may need a drop of dishwashing liquid.

Can it go in the dishwasher?

Our supplier does not state that it is dishwasher safe, so we do not claim it either. Washing it by hand takes about ten seconds: warm water, a sponge, a drop of dishwashing liquid after raw meat, then stand it up to dry.

Can I cut raw meat on it?

Yes, like on any board. Wash it well with hot soapy water before it touches food you will not cook. Plenty of cooks keep one board for raw meat and one for everything else, which is what The Duo and The Set are for.

Which one should I get?

The Board is 34 x 23 cm: room for a capsicum, an onion and a handful of herbs side by side, and still small enough for the sink. The Duo adds a 25 x 15 cm board for lemons, garlic, cheese and fruit. The Set has all three sizes (34 x 23, 29 x 20 and 25 x 15 cm) and makes a good gift.

Why does it ship from China, and how long does it take?

We work with a fulfilment partner whose warehouse is in China, close to where the boards are made. That keeps the price down. It ships within 1‑3 business days and arrives within 8‑14 business days of your order, with tracking the whole way.

Will I pay customs, duty or GST on delivery?

No. The price at checkout is all you pay. Shipping is free.

What if I am not happy with it?

Email us within 60 days of delivery with your order number and a photo. We refund what you paid for the boards you are not happy with, and you keep them. If it arrives faulty or damaged, we replace or refund it, as the Australian Consumer Law requires. See the returns and guarantee policy.

Can I change or cancel my order?

Yes, until it ships. Email [email protected] with your order number and we cancel it for a full refund.

How can I pay?

Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal and Link, through Stripe's secure checkout. We never see your card number. We do not offer Afterpay at the moment.

Are there reviews?

Not yet. Barechop is new and we will not invent any. Reviews will appear here once real customers write them, the good and the bad.

Who is behind this

A note from us.

Barechop is a small brand from Codext GmbH, a company in southern Germany. We picked titanium because the complaints about chopping boards are always the same: plastic gets scarred, wood goes mouldy, and both hang on to the smell of last night's garlic.

We are new, so here is what we can promise instead of reviews: real specs (including the slightly less exciting ones, like what metal does to a knife edge), honest delivery times, a reply from a real person within one business day, and a guarantee that does not make you post a board back across the world.

If something is not right, write to [email protected]. Codext GmbH, Frankenstraße 10, 74549 Wolpertshausen, Germany. Phone +49 7904 5203106.
